Marriage is a tricky business. A lot of people are not willing to work hard enough to keep the spark alive and that can be infuriating for the other person in the relationship. But in most cases, through God’s grace and our faith, things always tend to work itself out in the end. Nikki Young is a hardcore fan of Tom Hanks. So naturally, she went to attend a reading of his new book, Uncommon Type, at the Texas Book Festival. “I have been a fan of Tom Hanks since 1982 when I first saw Bosom Buddies, I followed his career and loved, laughed, cried and sighed at every movie, every TV appearance, every skit and more. He was my happy place,” she wrote on Facebook.
Through Nikki was admittedly head over heels for her favorite actor, she still pouted as the Q&A section rolled around. She couldn’t submit a question to her favorite actor and that didn’t feel good. Ryan McFarling, who is Nikki’s boyfriend, kept reminding her that her favorite actor was, after all, just a mere 10 feet away from her. However, Nikki was still disheartened by the fact that he was interacting with so many people and she wasn’t one of them. “What happened next, I was not prepared for, but can honestly say has been the greatest moment of my life!” wrote Nikki. As the reading came to an end and it was time for the final question, Tom Hanks announced that the last question was submitted by non-other than Nikki’s boyfriend Ryan. Ryan’s question wasn’t for Tom Hanks though, it was for Nikki. As the legendary actor read the question out loud, Ryan got down on one knee and turned to his girlfriend. “Will you marry me?”
“I went from disappointment to shock to ugly tears in 10 seconds flat,” said Nikki. Nikki says that her proposal was every rom-com movie come to life. “The man who makes my heart smile presented me with a ring and asked me to marry him. I said yes, of course! Then, the man who has been my happy place for years hugged me and congratulated me and later, even gave me a flower. I got to live a real romantic comedy moment with my love, Ryan McFarling, co-starring Tom Hanks! Talk about true love! To quote Sleepless in Seattle, ‘It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we’re supposed to be together.’” Congratulations to the happy couple!
