Tom Brady rookie card sells for $400,100 at auction

A Tom Brady rookie card has recently been sold at an auction for $400,100, the highest auction price in recorded history for a football card.

Sold in a joint operation by PWCC Marketplace and ebay, the card is part of the incredibly-rare 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket. Only 100 copies of the card were ever made, and only two, including the one just sold, have been graded at 9 or higher.

“The offered BGS 9 is the highest graded example in the books, matched by only one other copy,” PWCC said in its listing. “Arguably the single finest example in the world and boasting many attributes of a GEM MINT card. While we see faint wisps of corner wear, the overall presentation is undeniably pack fresh.” (Friends, strive to live your life so that you’re always described as “pack fresh.”)

“This sale was record-setting but also largely predicted,” PWCC Marketplace CEO Brett Huigens said in a statement, per ESPN. “The trading card market is rapidly maturing among tangible asset investors and record prices are becoming increasingly frequent, especially among the market’s most desired issues.”

PWCC’s description called it “certainly the most important modern football card ever auctioned publicly.”
