Millennials Ditch Traditional Engagement Rings & Have Diamonds Embedded In Their Fingers Instead

Things in this world are changing every day as new trends come and go. One tradition that has been pretty steady is the engagement ring. It’s the typical story: a boy and girl fall in love, the boy buys a ring, and the boy gets down on one knee and presents the girl with the ring. Now, though, there is a new trend where the girl actually embeds a diamond in her finger… now that’s a twist!

This new trend is catching on among millennials and it’s really unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Sam Abbas is a tattoo and piercing artist who owns NYC Ink Studio, and he said that he is having more and more young people coming in and asking for this trendy piercing. Because it involves putting a foreign object into your body, Abbas mentioned there could be problems if the person doesn’t take care of the piercing properly. They have to clean the piercing two to three times a day and making sure whoever does the piercing is a professional and has a lot of experience. “You’re dealing with the blood, so you got to be very, very safe,” Abbas said. “What we do, we sterilize everything.”

So, how does it work? Well, first a piercing artist marks the spot where the diamond will go with a pen, they will then clean the area with alcohol and iodine. Next, the artist uses a tool to remove a small patch of skin, and then they will insert an anchor made of titanium or gold, which holds the gem. The whole piercing process takes about 10 minutes and costs around $100 for the piercing. The diamond you choose is a separate cost. So, does it hurt? “You’re going to feel it. You’re getting pierced. It is a little bit painful. But people did it, and I have a lot of people who say, ‘Oh nice, it’s nothing, I expect more,” Abbas said.

So, exactly how safe is this new trend? Dermatologist Dr. Monica Halem has some concerns. “First of all, these procedures are not being done by a doctor, and it is a surgical procedure,” Halem said. “There are a lot of important structures that sit right under the skin there that can easily be damaged, like tendons.” Not only that, but there is also the danger of the diamond snagging. “That’s sitting right above the skin, that’s easily caught on something and can do a lot of damage,” said Halem.
