College Students Buy Smelly Old Couch For $20 And Accidentally Find Widow’s Secret Fortune Of $40,000

Three college students from the State University of New York bought a used couch at Salvation Army for just $20. The couch was ugly and smelly, but it was the only one that fit inside their living room, so it was a good deal they thought.

Two months later, Reese, Cally, and Lara were watching a movie together on that couch when they felt something strange in the cushions. They felt around and under the arm of the sofa, they pulled out an envelope containing $700 in $20 bills.

After some more digging, they found several more envelopes containing $40,000 total. Needless to say, they freaked out.

But just as they began dreaming up all the ways in which they could use the unexpected fortune, they noticed a woman’s name on one of the envelopes.

The next day, they found a phone book listing that matched the name on the envelope and called the number. Whoever it was that answered, the students made a pact to bring the money back to its rightful owner or owners.

When the trio showed up to the woman’s home, she told them how the $40,000 were the savings her husband and she kept inside the couch for 30 years. After her husband passed away, the woman had back surgery and began sleeping on the couch every night. As a favor to her mom, the woman’s daughter brought the old couch to the Salvation Army and bought her a new bed instead — with no clue the money was still tucked away inside.

She gave the college students $1,000 as a gesture of gratitude.
