Three years ago, after his family found a lump on his neck, Sammy Hodgett was diagnosed with acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. The little boy credits his hero’s music, Blake Shelton, for helping him through this hard time. While Sammy was in a medically induced coma, the country star and the Voice coach played “Boys ‘Round Here.”
“I just like his voice and how he sings,” Sammy said to WQAD Quad Cities in November 2017. What got to his mom, Becky, was that Sammy recognized the song during his recovery.
Since then, they have been praying and hoping that Sammy would be able to meet his hero in person. Blake ended up learning about his story and sent a tweet out in December 2017, saying he can’t wait to meet the little boy — and the singer didn’t let him down!
Finally, on February 23, 2018, Sammy’s wish was realized. “It’s amazing and it’s unbelievable, like, you don’t really think something like that’s gonna happen,” Becky stated.
As you’ll see in the video today, Blake called out the little boy by name once he walked into the room, and Sammy absolutely lit up! He even brought the country singer a special shirt that has his top lyrics.
“I’m wearing this tonight after the show, for sure,” Blake said to Sammy.
