First birthdays are always unique, but for this miracle baby, her first birthday was a second opportunity at life. After having been diagnosed with a rare congenital defect, little Rebecca got a new heart for her birthday.
When Rebecca was born, Mother Christy Brown realized that her child was not gaining weight, so she brought her to the doctor’s office. It was then when she was diagnosed with ALCAPA. This unusual congenital heart defect leads the left coronary artery to become improperly connected to the heart, which may eventually lead to heart failure.
“It looks like a 7-month-old that’s had a massive heart attack; there was so much damage to the left side of her heart,” Christy confessed about her miracle baby. “It turned me upside down. It turned us all upside down,” she said about her daughter’s health struggles.
Baby Rebecca’s health took an even more complex turn when she had open-heart surgery and had an artificial heart put in. She had a brain bleed while waiting for this transplant and spent six weeks in the ICU.
However, the little girl received good news just in time for her first birthday. “The surgeon came in and nudged me awake and said, ‘I think we have a heart for her.’ And I sat up and looked around like, I’m dreaming this. Like, this can’t be real,” Christy said.
It was then that sweet baby Rebecca got a new heart! Not only did she get this new organ, but she also got the chance to spend her birthday at home with her family. In fact, the sweet one-year-old even got to try a little cake that day! Now, that’s a celebration!
