Your Daily Devotion From Doctor Tabor
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
Our Mighty God
Have you ever wondered why God seems to have so many names? Or even why he’s comprised of three distinct dimensions—Father, Son, and Spirit? The Jewish people often gave God names or descriptive phrases that reflected their experience of him. Therefore, some emphasize God’s ability to provide while others stress his righteousness.
As God’s prophet, Isaiah foretold the nation of Israel that God was going to send a Savior, a baby born of a virgin who would be God’s own Son. It’s curious, though, that the prophet Isaiah lists three names here that would all apply to God. In fact, we usually think of the Holy Spirit as our counselor and comforter. Everlasting Father is clear enough and reminds us of our Abba’s love. Prince of Peace seems to reflect Jesus’ role as the King’s Son, royalty sent to end strife and heal wounds. Together these three indeed comprise the fourth name Isaiah mentions, Mighty God.
Father, Son, and Spirit—God remains ever present in our lives, demonstrating his love, grace, and power in limitless ways.
Pray: “Father, Son, and Spirit—I am so amazed at the ways you reveal yourself to me and share your presence and power for everyone to see.”
