The Answer You Never Thought of to the Question, ‘Mary Did You Know?’

Signs of Christmas are showing themselves everywhere. Stores are filled with lights and garland, classic movies are showing on television and holiday music is playing on the radio. One of those songs is ‘Mary Did You Know?’

When the writer Mark Lowry created the piece he thought of it as questions he’d love to discuss with Mary. For some, this may seem confusing because she was, in fact, aware that her son was God.

I for one felt the same way. My answer was ‘of course she knew.’ I was happy to see that I was not alone. Jillian, a faith-based writer, had many of the same opinions. She even mentioned the thoughts to her Mother-In-Law. This is where things get interesting.

Her Mother-in-Law shared her perspective on the song and boy was it eye-opening. Her response to the meaning of the song was, “Oh, I think of it as Gabriel telling Mary all of the incredible things her tiny baby would go on to do.”

Not only did Jillian start to see the song differently, but so did I.

Here are a few lines from the song. Imagine Gabriel talking to Mary.

“Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am”

Jillian took it a step further and pulled up the scripture where Gabriel speaks to Mary about bearing the son of God.

“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.” –Luke 1:30-33

What a neat view to have on the song that so long confused me. Not only did this create a new joy in the song for Jillian, but also for myself.
