God works in mysterious ways and has strange methods of speaking to us. Chelsea Haley is one woman who said that God spoke to her in a dream.. and two days later her dream came true!
Haley was 24 years old at the time and worked as a teacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Haley had joined Teach for America and hoped to make a difference at a low-income school in her area. But, one out-of-control fourth-grade boy almost made her quit teaching completely. 12-year-old Jerome Robinson was the uncooperative student, and he was failing every subject. The boy was often suspended and was it was a constant struggle for Haley to control him. “At certain points, his behavior got so bad, I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’” Haley said. “I can’t be a teacher.” As she debated whether or not she could continue teaching there, Haley learned about Jerome’s home life. Jerome’s past had been filled with trauma and tragedy. She learned not only about Jerome’s struggles, but also the struggles of his mother. “It was really hard on her after she lost her husband,” Haley said. “It was just a combination of tragedy coupled with the other social situations you face when you live in poverty.”
Soon after that, Haley’s 2-year time commitment with Teach for America was coming to an end. Still, she felt compelled to stick around at the school for one more year. It was the fall of 2015 when Haley claims she had a dream that changed the trajectory of her life forever. In the dream, Haley said that she heard the voice of God telling her that she was meant to be Jerome’s mother. At first, Haley actually laughed at the ridiculous notion, but then something profound happened at work the next day as she sat watching Jerome quietly take a test. Haley said that at that moment, she had a calm, peaceful feeling come over her body that she knew could only come from God. Jerome then looked up from his test and asked his teacher a question. “He just asked me if he could live with me,” Haley said. “I told him I had been feeling the same thing.”
The choice was further confirmed as Jerome’s birth mother also brought up adoption when speaking to Haley. The boy’s birth mom really desired for Jerome and her other son, Jace, to have a better life. At that point, Haley put all her trust in God, adopted Jerome and Jace, and took a teaching job in Georgia. She said that she could hardly believe her life’s unexpected twist, but she wouldn’t change a thing. Today, Jerome is thriving in school and has claimed a spot on the honor roll for the first time in his life. Making ends meet hasn’t been easy for the single mother of two, who is just living off a teacher’s salary, but God has always provided. “I always knew I wanted to be a mom and I wouldn’t trade this for anything,” Haley said.
