God gave nurses gifts of unconditional love and unwavering strength so that they can help those in need every day. God made sure that his favorite creations can feel his presence when nurses take care of them. We should be grateful for all the wonderful things God has done, to make this world a better place for all living beings. In 1977, Amanda Scarpinati was only three months old when she fell on a steam humidifier. As the machine was extremely hot, Amanda suffered from severe burns which resulted in her being hospitalized and having to undergo numerous surgeries skin grafting surgeries.
Even though her burns healed over time, Amanda used to get bullied because of her scars. She said, “Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented. I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere, caring for me.” She added, “You can feel the compassion and love she had for me.”
Despite not knowing the nurse’s name, Amanda tried to find her, so that she could thank her for everything. 20 years later, Amanda gave it another shot, with the help of social media. As her post went viral, it reached Angela Leary, another nurse who worked in the hospital Amanda was admitted to back in 1977. Angela told her that the nurse who helped her was Susan Berger. Amanda met Susan for the first time in her life, and she couldn’t hold back her tears.
Susan said, “I don’t know how many nurses would be lucky enough to have something like this happen, to have someone remember you all that time. I feel privileged to be the one to represent all the nurses who cared for her over the years.”
