Former legendary Buffalo Bills quarterback, Jim Kelly, has lived through many battles on the gridiron and off. His hardest fought has been his war with cancer. Renowned for his skills with a football, Kelly has fought a hard fought battle against oral cancer more than once.

This time around, his wife Jill is asking for prayer as doctors continue to evaluate his condition. According to Heavy.com, Kelly originally dealt with cancer back in June 2013.

Doctors told Kelly that he had squamous cell carcinoma of the upper jawbone. With about a year-and-a-half of treatments, the doctors had finally declared him cancer-free.

But the victory celebration had come too soon of the endzone. The New York Post reported that Kelly confirmed his cancer had indeed returned on March 1, 2018.

“With all of you by my side, we will fight and win this battle together,” he said in a statement. “Staying ‘Kelly Tough’ and trusting God, will carry us through the difficult time.”

The Kelly family has chronicled the challenges and struggles of treatment and recovery on their social media.

Jill has shared stories and images detailing her husband’s painful ordel while also talking about the strength of their marriage and strength in God above.

You can imagine the emotions that flooded the Kellys when they announced that Jim was once again cancer-free. “We finally got back the results from Jim’s recent MRI…CLEAN!” Jill said on Instagram.

“Thank GOD! It took a bit longer than usual because of all the reconstruction Jim has had inside his mouth.”

When Jim had to return for another scan on May 22, Jill took to Facebook. This time to ask people to pray.

“It’s scan day,” she wrote. “Honestly, I don’t know how he does it.”

“Not just the MRIs and scans and the waiting and wondering and worrying … but the everyday stuff. The pain that never seems to go away.

“All the other issues that go along with having been through cancer treatments (if you know, you know). Just all of it.”

Then she made the request that brought tears to my eyes: “As you have so many times for us in the past, will you pray?”

“I believe in the power of prayer, but especially in the One who knows exactly what we need at all times! He is faithful and so good!”

It’s so easy to get caught up in the “what if’s” of tomorrow and totally ignore the gift of RIGHT NOW. I was worried about the outcome of the scans. What if…? And the Lord reminded me of the fact that no matter what the outcome, no matter what the scan results showed, God is still GOOD, REGARDLESS…because He is God! And His plans are perfect! He doesn’t make mistakes! This kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight! It’s a letting go and letting God one moment at a time. It’s learning to understand and accept how little I can control, but how perfectly in control God is. And although it’s dreadfully hard sometimes, I would not want it any other way. I’m praying for you! Proverbs 3:5-6

In an update, Jill revealed that the scan went well and Jim was, once again, declared cancer-free.
