Aussie dad Brad Lewis’ life hangs in the balance after he took a header off of a balcony to save his son Oscar from a fall.
Nerf wars are serious business to eight-year-olds, and when Oscar lost a bullet over a balcony, he rushed to retrieve it. Oscar lost his balance and began to topple over the edge. Brad’s parental instincts kicked in and he lunged to grab his son.
Unfortunately, the forward momentum Brad made to save his boy took them over the edge head first. Brad protected Oscar by holding him to his chest and turning his back toward the ground as best he could. He wrapped his arms and legs around the boy to spare him from the brunt of the fall.
Oscar, who passed out from the force of the impact had minor injuries. But now Brad fights for his life.
Soon after impact Brad’s first thoughts were for his boys. He asked a friend present at the scene, “Are the kids okay? Don’t let them see me like this. Don’t let me die, mate.”
Damage to his skull and C6 vertebrae, along with other injuries make Brad a lucky man to be alive.
While Oscar now has a fear of falling, the pair is back home, working toward full recovery together. A walking miracle, Brad’s condition amazes doctors. While the long-term effects remain undetermined, his friends and family are praying for a complete recovery.
Weeks in the hospital and loss of work meant this accident rocked this family’s finances and the community around them rallied around them and started a GoFundMe page, which raised over $100,000. Brad and his wife, Suz, were blown away by the generosity of others and shared their gratitude.
“While the family is still trying to come to terms with what happened, they are so incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from their family, friends and the wider community — many of you they don’t even know.”
We join this family and their friends praying for a speedy and complete recovery.
