‘Mary, Did You Know?’ is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Mark Lowry, the songwriter, took over 7 years to perfect the lyrics to this powerful tune.
The idea for the song came to Mark when he was writing a Christmas program for Jerry Falwell in 1984. He started thinking about what he would ask Mary if she was sitting right in front of him and how she must have felt. He put together a list of questions that eventually became the lyrics we know and love today.
‘Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God’
In 1991, once the lyrics were completed, Mark asked his friend Buddy Greene to write music to accompany his words. It only took about 30 minutes for Buddy to compose the iconic music for ‘Mary, Did You Know?’
After it’s recording, the song went on to become a modern Christmas favorite and has been covered by countless artists over the years. This is one of those songs that truly reminds us of the real reason for the season.
