Thomas Roberts was a long-term non believer. But after reaching the final stages of lung cancer, he had a massive change of heart. Thomas was a patient at the University of Alabama, Birmingham Hospital when he decided he wanted a fully submerged water baptism as he knew his time was very limited.
Since Thomas is in a wheelchair and dependent on oxygen, the final wish was a major undertaking. However, the dedicated team at the hospital didn’t let anything stop them from helping this man give his life to God in a beautiful way.
While he was surrounded by his family and a group of carers, Thomas was lowered to the rehabilitation center in the pool and separated from oxygen for a few moments.
Corey Agricola, who is the chaplain at the hospital, was the one who helped this incredible moment come to be.
“I have served in the ministry over 20 years and seven of those at UAB. This is the greatest day of my career.” Agricola said, “Thomas, you never thought you would preach a sermon in your life; but you preached today. You made an impact on people who you do not even know.”
The family of Thomas was overwhelmed by the baptism. Gina Gibson, who is the sister of Thomas, said, “It brings me complete comfort and peace because I know where he is going now. I don’t have to worry about it. Now there will be great joy just knowing where he is going. He is at peace. He was born again. You could see that on his face after the baptism. He was born again.”
It was only a few days later when Thomas lost his battle to cancer. However, we can all be glad knowing that He is finally pain-free and in Heaven.
