As a kid, I grew up watching Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson defeat anyone who dared to step in the ring with him. He was my favorite wrestler. His infectious personality demanded my unyielding loyalty, to which I happily obliged. I never quite figured out exactly what The Rock “was cooking,” but whatever it was, I certainly “smelled it.” I had bought into The Rock’s persona and could not get enough. Stated simply, I was a super-fan.
Some time has passed between now and then, and I am not quite the wrestling fan that I was as a child. However, I still enjoy seeing “The Rock” in Hollywood movies. Perhaps a bit of my childhood fervor has yet to relent. Would I be star-struck if I saw him, I wonder? I am not sure. What I am sure of, however, is that a celebrity’s persona is often larger than his or her life. Doubtless, “The Rock” is a much different person than Mr. Johnson. Yet, at times, I (and perhaps you do as well) forget that these individuals are not entirely unlike myself.
I am sure Mr. Johnson has a relatively normal life consisting of normal problems. Perhaps he tackles boring errands and normal tedious tasks. Perhaps he takes normal trips to the grocery store and takes normal days off from work. Perhaps he even grumbles about his boss. The truth is, you and I probably have more in common with Mr. Johnson than you and I might think. How so?
We are both human, and no status, however bold and infectious, can strip a man of his human nature. No amount of money, Instagram followers, or fame can strip a man (or woman) of his fundamental need for God’s grace and love. “The Rock” recognizes his need for God. Do you smell what he is cooking?
