Married couples who have been together for decades seem to be getting rarer by the day. The question that is always asked to these couples who have been together for 50, 60 years is what their secret is, and the answers are always different.

I remember a couple saying, “Never go to sleep without settling an argument,” which stuck with me. So trust and contact seems to be very sound advice to the newlyweds.

Yet one North Carolina couple deserves all our gratitude for having celebrated their 82nd wedding anniversary. The pair both celebrated their 103rd and 100th birthdays within seven days of each other.

And their path to a long and happy marriage is quite straightforward.

D.W. Williams, 103, and Willie Williams, 100, had a well-deserved party at the North Charlotte Church, where they celebrated their wedding anniversary and birthdays by singing hymns with their friends and family.

“To see them at this age and still doing well, it’s just a blessing to have them here,” granddaughter BJ Williams-Greene said, according to Boston 25 News.

The couple aren’t far behind making it into the record books for the oldest living spouses by total age between the two partners. The record is currently held by 100-year-old Miyako and her husband, Masao Matsumoto, 108, from Japan.

The Japanese couple say that their successful marriage is due to her patience.

However D.W. and Willie said they have no special secret to their success, “just be nice to each other,” Willie Williams said.

They said they have lived through wars, the Depression and the civil rights era, Boston 25 News reported.
