Horses are some of the most beautiful creatures in this world. Fast, powerful, and a joy to be around, horses are incredible animals.  Perhaps that’s why this optical illusion was so fascinating to us. Humans like both challenges and horses — and here you get both at once.

This challenge, painted by the artist Bev Doolittle, goes all the way back to 1978. She found inspiration for the illusion while traveling through the South with her husband.

The painting is as gorgeous as it is exhilarating and has fascinated people since it appeared in the ‘70s.

She painted the image in colors that make it difficult to estimate the exact number of horses, and very few can find them all on the first try.
