What Does John 3:16 Really Mean?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16

One of the most well known verses in the New Testament is John 3:16. We often hear this verse in church services, we see it plastered on billboards along the highway and occasionally notice it written on the cheeks of our favorite athletes. Although we see and hear the words God gave us in John 3:16 we rarely take time to reflect on it’s meaning.

Jesus was a perfect, sinless person who was both fully man and fully God. He came to earth as a baby and lived a life obedient to God the father. Jesus lived a perfect life, but his death is just important. He died on the cross along with criminals and not once complained. People beat him, spat on him and yelled profanities at the perfect man, but Jesus knew what he had to do.

The reason Jesus died on the cross was to save us from our sins. He knew that there was no way for us to reach God or heaven on our own, so He came to make a way for us. If we believe in Jesus and live our life loving Him, we will not perish but have eternal life.

But the story doesn’t stop there! God didn’t send Jesus to die for just a few people, He died so that anyone who places their faith in Him will live in heaven. God loves the world, and we ought to be the same way.

Now, go share this story and tell of Jesus and what he has done for us! Go make disciples, God bless you!
