Here’s the Actual Real Reason Why Steve Harvey’s Talk Show Got Canceled

It was announced officially on May 10 that the NBC network is canceling his Steve Harvey’s talk show.

The syndicated daytime talk show titled ‘Steve’ has been on the air for the past seven years. The final episode was filmed last Thursday, and NBC will be showing original Steve episodes through June and then start reruns in September.

According to reports, the network is making way for The Kelly Clarkson Show and giving the American Idol winner the primetime slot Steve had when it launches this coming September.

The Family Feud host had previously hinted back in January that Kelly would be taking his slot. When talking with reporters about the possibility of his show being canceled, he couldn’t help but sound upset.

“I thought I was [going to stay with NBC], until they made an announcement a couple weeks ago that they wanted to give Kelly Clarkson the owned-and-operated NBC networks — that’s my slot,” Steve announced. “I don’t know if it sold, it’s not selling like they thought, but I thought it would have been nice of them to come to me …”

He continued to slam NBC for how they allegedly handled the situation:

“I’m just an old school guy, and I just thought that you’re supposed to just talk to people and just go, ‘Look, you’ve been good business for us. This is what we’re thinking of doing, are you okay with that?’ No, you just don’t put something in the paper and say, ‘I’m just going to make this move right here,’ because it’s crazy.”

But that’s not all. Variety claims that Steve’s show may have been “the casualty of animosity between NBCUniversal and Endeavor’s IMG Original Content over IMG’s takeover of the show two seasons ago.”

After his initial 5-year deal with co-producers Endemol Shine North America and NBCUniversal ended, Steve cut a deal with IMG Original Content in 2016 to produce a new version of his talk show (which is why he renamed it Steve from The Steve Harvey Show). The new program promised to include more celebrity guest spots and more comedic segments. Changing the show from its original format.

IMG also offered Steve a larger ownership stake in the show, with more creative power, and a higher salary. Steve then took the deal. As a result, NBCUniversal was reportedly “furious” for having lost their share in Steve’s show. It’s not 100% clear if this ‘bad blood’ was a factor in the decision to cancel Steve and replace with another show, but it is interesting set of circumstances nonetheless.

It is odd that Steve Harvey has now been replaced by Melissa McCarthy on the NBC show ‘Little Big Shots’.

The report also states that the show ‘Steve’ may pop up again afterall. The show is looking at venturing online, “possibly with Facebook, to showcase the kind of comedic and topical segments” that made it a hit in the first place.

It doesn’t sound like it’s goodbye for Steve Harvey — it’s maybe, see you later … on a different platform.
