Here’s How Much Sleep You Really Need Based On Your Age

Getting enough sleep each night can be difficult but it’s crucial! Are you getting enough rest?

God has given us one life. So, we strive to make the best of this life, but it seems like we all have so much to do and so little time at hand! Twenty four hours is often not sufficient to fully do all that we want to do in a day. But, the time that is lost should not be accounted for by sacrificing sleep. A good night’s rest is important for people of all age groups. But how much sleep is really required?

0-3 months old: Newborns sleep during a major portion of the day. They need at least 14 to 17 hours of sleep each day to ensure healthy growth and development. Getting enough sleep also helps make sure that the baby doesn’t get cranky.

4-11 month old: This is the time when major physical growth occurs. So, the body has to rest for 12-15 hours each day.

1-2 years: Toddler years are perhaps the most crucial years of life. Major physical milestones, such as walking, occur at this age. This is also an age where the babies start exploring and learning a lot of new things. So, their body needs 11-14 hours of sleep every day to promote brain development as well as to give the active body the rest it needs.

3-5 years: This is the age when children start becoming more independent. The preschool years are very demanding. Children this age are typically involved in a wide variety of physical and intellectual activities. So, to keep them well rested, they should get 10-13 hours of sleep per day.

6-13 years: This is an age where school gets more challenging. Mental growth takes place at a fast pace. Children this age have to be attentive in class and so they need 9-11 hours of sleep each day.

Teens 14-17 years: Teenage years are is a time where a lot of changes occur in the body. Physical, mental and hormonal changes all take place. To handle all the changes and to ensure a smoother transition, teens should get 8-10 hours of sleep. This also helps to make sure that the hormonal changes do not impact their moods.

18-25 years: This is the age when people start a life of their own and this can be a very demanding phase. This is also an age of teeming social life. But, amidst all the fun-filled nights of parties and the busy routines, it is important to get 7-9 hours of sleep every day.

26-64 years: Many people at this age have work and family to balance. This is also an age where stress is an important part of life. So, to help the body wind down and allow your mind to let go of the day’s stress, adults should get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

65 years and older: At this age, stress levels typically slowly go down. The number of physical activities also reduce. So. the body doesn’t really need more than 8 hours of sleep.
