Dogs need to move around, run around, take advantage of their noses and play with other dogs. Of course, keeping them in a leash for their own safety may be necessary sometimes, but sometimes all dogs need to be allowed to run freely.

Herschel is a wonderful German Shepherd who was neglected by uncaring owners, unfortunately. He’s been stuck to a pole for the past five years and hasn’t got the love and care he deserved. The pup was excited about a new environment, after finally being rescued and taken to a shelter.

Unfortunately, the shelter offered little to fill the energetic needs of Herschel… Herschel was so happy and energetic when he was adopted that for his new family it simply became too much. His excitement and energy were a bit too much for the family. Unfortunately, it looked like the dog would spend his future days in a cage.

Fortunately, there was a family who had some room for Herschel. He was surrendered to Michelson Found Animals who got him the medical and grooming care he deserved.

Thanks to Rocky Kanaka and his “Dogs Day Out” program, Herschel had an incredible adventure that he would remember for a very long time.

They thought that Herschel deserved to have one adventerous day day.

The road trip started with stopping to play in mountain snow.

This new white fluffy stuff was a wonder to Herschel.

Running and tossing snow in the air soon had him happy in this environment. Herschel also got to give teddy bear hugs to kids that appreciated his funny nature.

Yes, Herschel was finally free to explore, run and appreciate all that he had missed.

But the best was yet to come.

Upon arriving at the beach, Herschel could not contain himself.

Before they even entered the beach, Herschel started chattering like Chewbacca, full of curiosity and wonder.

Herschel was first introduced to the sand between his toes.

Once he stepped foot on the ocean, his immediate response was to start rolling over the waves.
