Figure Skater Makes History By Being The First U.S. Woman To Pull Off This Move In The Olympics

God gifts each one of us with special talents and abilities! Some of us are blessed with academic excellence, others are skilled artists, some people are musically talented, and some of us are gifted with amazing athletic abilities. We all enjoying watching the best of the best athletes from all over the world fight for a gold medal in the Olympics. It takes years of training and hard work for an athlete to make it into this prestigious competition and it is always such an emotional event to watch as we see these athletes rise and fall. This year, an American Olympian has made history after she nailed this notoriously difficult move in her stunning figure skating routine.

Mirai Nagasu is a figure skater from the United States who became the first American woman to nail a triple Axel jump during her routine. The move is a maneuver named after Norwegian figure skater Axel Paulsen and it is a very rare accomplishment that few skaters have ever done. In fact, Reuters reports that Nagasu’s successful jump makes her the third woman ever to do the move in Olympic competition. “I feel really great,” Nagasu, who is only 24 years old, said after the routine. “Going into it, I was like a train, get on those tracks and get some speed. To nail it the way I did — and even out of the corner of my eye, I could see my teammates standing in excitement.” According to Reuters, the first two women to land this move at the Olympics were Midori Ito and Mao Asada, who were both skaters fr omJapan. “Maybe it’s the Japanese genetics, but lucky for me, I‘m American, so I’ll be the first U.S. lady,” Nagasu, who is also the daughter of Japanese immigrants, joked.

Nagasu’s parents run a sushi restaurant in California. Her mother has always supported her daughter’s dreams and was very dedicated to her interest in skating. In fact, her mother made all of her performance costumes by hand! “She also, like Michelle’s mom, sewed sequins on one by one, and I would complain that they were not as shiny as the rocky crystals because we got ours at Target and Michael’s,” Nagasu said, referring to her idol and two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan. Now, it looks like the sky’s the limit for Nagasu! Watch her nail the triple Axel jump in the video below:
