We are called to be generous and loving toward one another. Now, we all have had good and bad experiences while dining out. Sometimes we have a great server and leave them a big tip, but other times we feel as if the service we received was bad and we leave less money than we normally would. One couple recently shared their “tipping strategy” online, but it’s been causing quite an outrage!
The strategy that they shared involves laying out five dollar bills on the table and then taking one dollar away each time the wait staff does something they disapprove of. The, at the end of the meal, the tip they leave is whatever money, if any, is left sitting on the table. They described this strategy as “a good dinner experiment we both wanted to see play out.” The couple claims that this way of tipping is guaranteed to result in good service, but people online have a different opinion.
One person responded sarcastically to the couple’s post: “If you want the wait staff to spit in your food, you could always just ask” while another tweeted, “please, please tell me this is not a real post by an actual living human being. Please.” According to the United States Department of Labor, “An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 per hour in direct wages if that amount combined with the tips received at least equals the federal minimum wage.” So, do you think this tipping strategy is fair?
