Children are God’s gift to us and a parent would do anything to ensure the safety and well-being of their precious child. However, we are not in control, God is, and sometimes our children fall sick. Even though this is a devastating circumstance that many of us don’t even want to think about, we must remember that God is loving, good, and faithful to us. Dylan Askin is a 3-year-old who was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer. Just one month after undergoing cancer treatment, the little boy collapsed at school in Derby, England. Dylan has pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, which is a type of cancer that causes cysts to form on his lungs, making it hard for him to breathe. His prognosis was good after chemotherapy, but then things took a bad turn when his lung collapsed.
Little Dylan was rushed to the hospital where doctors were forced to put him on life support. He was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit and contracted an infection. Soon after that, all of the little boy’s major organs began to fail. Dylan’s heart raced to 200 beats per minute as his body temperature spiked and plummeted. It was on Good Friday when Dylan’s parents Kerry, who is 29 and Mike, who is 36, were asked if they wanted to remove their little boy from life support.
Kerry explained that it was a miracle Dylan has survived as long as he did after his lungs collapsed in January of 2016. But, now Mike and Kerry had to make the heartbreaking decision to remove Dylan from life support. They had Dylan baptized and said their goodbyes. Bryce, their older son, was at the hospital with them while their other baby Logan was being cared for by friends.
As doctors began to wean Dylan off the muscle sedatives, something unthinkable happened – Dylan began to move his legs! If the boy was really was brain dead, he shouldn’t be able to do that. The doctors were amazed by this movement and began running tests. The soon found out Dylan was not brain dead after all and that there was still hope for this little boy! Dylan stayed on life support for a few more weeks and slowly recovered. Kerry and Mike now refer to Dylan as their miracle baby! Watch more of Dylan’s story in the video below:
