After many years of searching, an 82-year-old, Eileen Macken, who was brought up in an orphanage in Ireland, was finally reunited in amazing fashion with her mother.
She only recently discovered that her mom was alive and living in Scotland.
Last year she went public with her search on the RTE Liveline show, which is Ireland’s most popular radio broadcast, in an attempt to find her mother.
She reached out to the listeners of the show to help her reconnect with her mother even though in the back of her mind she was relatively pessimistic.
One of the listeners on the radio show that day, who happened to be a genealogist, was able to help Eileen track her mother’s heritage in Scotland. She was absolutely thrilled.
In April, she and her husband George, joined by some of her other family members, made the trip to Scotland to meet her mother for the first time.
At the beginning her family was a bit nervous about Eileen taking the trip at her old age, but Macken was able to convince them otherwise.
“I heard she was alive at 103 and nothing would stop me trying to go and see her,” she said. With address in hand, they were off to Scotland.
They arrived at the house and were met at the door by a man. Eileen told the man that she and her family were from Ireland and that she had traveled this way to see her mother.
She then found her mother inside of the house, taking a look at the newspaper. When she told her mom who she was, she grabbed her hand and didn’t let it go.
It appears that she knew exactly what she meant, even at her old age. It goes without saying that the reunion was very emotional.
They bonded right away, and their visit lasted a total of 3 days.
On May 9th she made another appearance on Joe Duffy’s ‘Liveline’ and told the country about her story and how it was resolved.
